String Works Series II

Meet the Brentano String Quartet

Santa Fe Pro Musica presents the second concert of the String Works Series on Sunday, February 23,

featuring the award-winning Brentano String Quartet, joined by cellist Wilhelmina Smith performing string quintets by Franz Schubert and GRAMMY winner Steven Mackey.

Franz Schubert (1797 – 1828) composed the Quintet in C Major, D. 956  in 1828, two months before his death. He modeled this work on similar ones by Mozart and Beethoven but instead of adding a second viola to the standard string quartet, Schubert added a second cello. This work is now considered “one of the most beloved chamber works of all time” (Jane Vial Jaffe, music writer). The Brentano Quartet violinist Mark Steinberg writes that “More than almost any other composer, Schubert expressed the duality of beauty, its innocence and its terror, its embrace and its rebuff. With exquisite sensitivity he shows us gleaming visions and the pain of their unreachable distance… These visions, being always out of reach, inspire wandering, pathos and defiance.” Read the full note here.

Listen to the sublime second movement (10:47)

Steven Mackey (b. 1956) wrote Joy Rhythm Study (2018) for the Brentano String Quartet and Wilhelmina Smith on a commission from the Salt Bay Chamberfest and Santa Fe Pro Musica. Mackey writes that “From the very beginning the working title was Joy Rhythm Study. I assumed I would think of something more poetic, but I became attached to the transparent directness of that title. I began by exploring some rhythmic curiosities emerging from the confrontation/combination of seven in the time of two (or four) and then became preoccupied with the idea of transforming the resultant off-kilter experiments, hobbled oddities and precarious textures into something joyful.”

Listen to Steven Mackey’s Uleg-Khem (3:20)
