String Works Series II

Meet the Brentano String Quartet

On Sunday, February 23, Pro Musica presents the second concert of the String Works Series featuring the award-winning Brentano String Quartet. Since its inception in 1992, the Brentano has appeared throughout the world to popular and critical acclaim. “Passionate, uninhibited and spellbinding” raves the London Independent. The New York Times extols its “luxuriously warm sound and yearning lyricism.” They have won the Cleveland Quartet and Naumburg Chamber Music awards and are inaugural members of the coveted Chamber Music Society Two at Lincoln Center. They have served as Quartet-in-Residence at London’s Wigmore Hall and Princeton University, and are currently Resident String Quartet at the Yale School of Music. The Quartet is named for Antonie Brentano, whom many scholars consider to be Beethoven’s “Immortal Beloved.”

The Brentano Quartet will be joined by cellist Wilhelmina Smith in a performance of Franz Schubert’s masterpiece, the String Quintet in C Major, D. 956 and Steven Mackey’s Joy Rhythm Study, both works written for a string quintet comprised of two violins, a viola and two cellos.

Guest artist Wilhelmina Smith has performed with the Marlboro, Santa Fe, Philadelphia, Boston and Lincoln Society chamber music festivals. She made her solo debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra while a student at the Curtis Institute of Music and was a prizewinner in the Leonard Rose International Cello Competition. She is the founder and Artistic Director of Salt Bay Chamberfest on the coast of Maine.
